Funded by a 2015 Kresge Innovation Projects: Detroit grant, this project by GrowTown and the Arab American and Chaldean Council (ACC) is based on GrowTown’s entry in the 2010 Buckminster Fuller International Challenge in which GrowTown was a semi-finalist. It is part of a land use and design methodology of integrating the Local Food Marketplace including urban agriculture into the physical and social fabric of the 7 Mile ACC / Penrose neighborhood. The result of a shared vision and collaboration among stakeholders and residents, the Penrose Market Garden and Nutrition Program is positioned as a key component at the nexus of the Local Food Marketplace, community development and sustainable urbanism in the ongoing development of this urban neighborhood.
