Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Awards Grant for ACC Jump Start
Project
Detroit, MI - April
4, 2007 The Arab American and Chaldean Council (ACC), a
non-profit human service organization has received a grant from Blue Cross
Blue Shield of Michigan in the amount of $6000 for its Jump Start
project. The Jump Start project targets Arab/Chaldean and African
American youth ages 12- 18 and their families in Northeast
Detroit. Jump Start aims to assist children in
developing healthy lifestyles while decreasing their chances of developing
cardiovascular risk factors. Prevention activities will focus on promoting
healthy choices that will ultimately lead children in developing healthy
minds and bodies.
Jump
Start focuses on encouraging healthy eating habits and physical
fitness through preventative activities that include nutrition education,
community awareness workshops, educational materials and monitored,
physical structured activities. Youth participants will receive a pre and
post survey to measure their knowledge of health and nutrition, a physical
fitness test to record fitness level and a Body Mass Index (BMI) to measure
body fat. All three tools are important indicators that will increase their
knowledge of the importance of maintaining healthy body weight while
promoting exercise and physical fitness and document project outcomes.
