Bob Ankrapp, of the Dearborn Heights Office of Emergency
Management gives a presentation on disaster preparedness for about 150 people
at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center in Dearborn on Wednesday.
Lieutenant Bradley Smith, of the Dearborn Office of Emergency Management,
said that the same workshop last year attracted only five participants. He
said the Arab American and Chaldean Council (ACC) helped to spread the word
and boost Wednesday's attendance.
"When ten people were here, I was ecstatic," Smith said. "If
everyone goes home and tells someone about it, we've done our jobs."
Ankrapp spoke and answered questions about how to
be ready with proper supplies, planning and means of communication in the
event of a disaster. One of the goals of the workshop was to encourage people
to volunteer for training and participation in Community Emergency Response
Teams (CERT).
Sufian Hannon of ACC said that since September, when a similar workshop was
held in Detroit,
19 local residents have registered for CERT training, which entails 20 hours
of classes and optional continued participation. "We're going to do one
(workshop) in each city," Hannon said. "Our goal is to have one
CERT team in each neighborhood."
This workshop was made possible by the efforts of the Wayne County Emergency
Management and Homeland Security Department.
To volunteer, or for more information on CERT, visit www.citizencorps.gov/cert.
