2nd Annual Customer Appreciation Day

CADThe Arab American and Chaldean Council's (ACC) Seven Mile Task Force and the Seven Mile Steering Committee is hosting its 2nd Annual 7 Mile Customer Appreciation Day & Holiday Celebration on Saturday, December 15, 2007 from 12:00pm to 4:00pm at ACC's Youth Recreation & Leadership Center, 62 W. Seven Mile Road, Detroit, 48203. This community event will reach out to more than 1000 needy families in the Seven Mile community to thank them for their participation and support.

"This 2nd annual Celebration underlines the collaboration between ACC and the residents and businesses in the Seven Mile area. In these tough economic times, ACC is trying to fill a void to insure that no child is left without Christmas. We thank all our donors who make it possible for us to distribute groceries, clothes, household gifts, clothing and toys to everyone in need," said Isa Hasan, Director of the Seven Mile Project.

The holiday themed appreciation day will offer community members and area business owners an opportunity to come together and celebrate not only the holidays but all that has been accomplished in this impoverished neighborhood in Detroit. The event will also include entertainment, games, food, refreshments, discounted holiday shopping at area businesses, and pictures with Santa.

To make a donation or to volunteer please call Isa Hasan, Director Seven Mile Project, at (313) 893- 5269.

ACC Cancer Health & Communications Campaign

phOn Nov. 15, 2007, Wayne State University and the Center for Urban and African American Health presented the WSU President's Biennial Conference on Health Disparities for all healthcare professionals and students concerning the treatment and prevention of health disparities.

Monty Fakhouri, ACC Director of Public Health, presented Knowledge, Attitudes, and Beliefs about Cancer in the Arab American and Chaldean Community. In this study the survey utilized a pre- test and post-test to assess changes in perceptions about the importance of early detection of cancers through screening due to education seminars. The test reflects a statistical significant change in participant responses between the pre and post test on several measures.

Hikmet Jamil, MD, Scientific Advisor to ACC and Professor at WSU presented Disparities in Self- Reported Chronic Diseases among Arab/Chaldean and Other Americans in Southeast Michigan. The objective of the study was to compare and contrast the prevalence of selected chronic diseases and risk- factors in Arab, Chaldean, African American and non- Middle Eastern Caucasian adults and increase the knowledge base of health status among the Arab/Chaldean American community, leading to educational and intervention programs.

ACC's Cancer Health & Communications Campaign targets adult male and female members with information about cancer, its impact in the Arab/Chaldean population and early detection measures available through appropriate screenings, which will ultimately help to reduce the health disparities gap in this ethnic/minority community. The program provides comprehensive cancer education, prevention and screening recommendations, one on one educational intervention, research through surveys to obtain demographic, knowledge and intent of project participants around cancer education and screening, and cancer forums and symposiums.

ACC Receives Grant from Wayne County

ygACC was recently awarded a grant from Wayne County to support a 9 month comprehensive after- school program for 50 high risk youth ages 7-17 in the 7 Mile area of Detroit. The program will include academic assistance, computer skills training, recreational, as well as life skills components. The program will focus on engaging these vulnerable youth, who are essentially Arab/Chaldean and African American in constructive activities designed to reduce the impact of community, family and school risk factors.

The program is designed to address the documented needs of the youth in this community, specifically poverty, lack of safe quality supervision, educational underachievement especially in reading and math, cultural isolation, lack of recreational opportunities, and lack of access to technology.

Infant Mental Health Services

infantACC's Behavioral Health Program is now offering Infant Mental Health Services. These services provide parent(s) and infant support, therapy to address ongoing mental health concerns, services to help the parent(s) and infant develop healthy relationships, referrals, therapeutic services to enable parent(s) to resolve conflict within the family, and information about infant's growth and development.

To be eligible for services, a person must be pregnant and/or a parent with a child between the ages of 0-3 years, parent(s) struggling with mental health concerns, infants experiencing delays in developmental milestones, infants failing to thrive, infant/toddler with emotional or behavioral difficulties, families that have experienced separation due to illness of parent or infant/toddler, and families that have experienced trauma or loss.
