ACC Holds
Commencement Ceremonies
|
|

|

In
cooperation with the Detroit Public Schools Adult Education Division, ACC's
English as a Second Language (ESL) program held two commencement ceremonies
on June 21 to celebrate the completion of the 2006/2007 academic year and the
achievement of its students. About 120 students graduated from ACC's Warrendale Adult
Learning Center
and 160 students graduated from ACC's Detroit
and Hamtramck Adult Learning
Centers.
At ACC's
Warrendale Adult Learning Center (16921 W. Warren) the students, many of whom are
refugees, ranged in age and cultural backgrounds. The students took part in
the year-long program aimed at teaching all aspects of the English language
from proper grammar to reading and writing. Students were also taught to
correctly pronounce words. Classes were in session five-days-a-week, six
hours daily. There are three levels of classes: beginners, intermediate and
advanced.
"It's
like a regular school and these students really came in with this program
with a desire to learn and succeed," said ESL Program Director Dr. Jawad Marzook. "Some students are going to
college to further their studies; many of them are in the process of obtaining
their American citizenship. Some people learned English as a way of getting
involved with their children's education while many of them learned the
language so they'd be able to do their daily chores like going to the bank
and grocery shopping."
The students
at ACC's Detroit/Hamtramck
Adult Learning Centers (8740 Jos Campau, Hamtramck
and 4000 Miller, Detroit)
would not typically be able to enroll in classes due to, lack of
transportation, housework and family obligations. The proximity of the
Detroit/Hamtramck Centers coupled with the availability of transportation
provided by the center, and the option of two sessions (morning and
afternoon) students were able to overcome these obstacles and attended
classes. The success of ACC's Adult Learning Centers is greatly attributed to
the ESL staffs' ability to understand the dialects and cultural backgrounds
of the students, which provides students with a comfortable environment and
encourages them to enroll.
Lebanese
native Emile Homsy, 80, proves that a person can never be too old to learn.
Homsy immigrated to the U.S. 10 years ago and recently decided to learn
English. "I can now talk to people with confidence and also can help
the people in my community who don't speak much English," he said. "Learning
English will help me to better social with others, run errands and deal with
people when I do my business."
