Brigadier General meets with ACC

army

Arab American and Chaldean Council's (ACC) President and CEO Dr. Haifa Fakhouri met with Brigadier General Anthony Cucolo Chief of Army Public Affairs Sept. 13. Held at ACC's Youth Recreation and Leadership Center, the meeting focused on ACC providing possible behavioral health services to all Arab American and Chaldean soldiers upon their return home from duty in Iraq.

More than 40 community leaders attended the meeting, which also provided insight into the current situation in Iraq.

General Cucolo answered questions and concerns raised by community leaders regarding the presence of the U.S. Army in Iraq. General Cucolo also presented Dr. Fakhouri with the U.S. Army's Leadership Award in recognition of ACC's role in making positive impacts in the areas they serve. Among those who attend the meeting were LTC Randall Williamson, Commander, Great Lakes Recruiting Battalion and Mark Czarnecki, Chief, Great Lakes.

Cancer Forum to Educate and Address the Chaldean Community

forum

"To raise awareness of cancer prevention and early detection of cancer among Arab American and Chaldean people."

The Arab American and Chaldean Council (ACC) partnered with William Beaumont Cancer Institute, a Michigan Cancer Consortium's (MCC) member organization, in hosting a forum focused on cancer in the Arab American and Chaldean population Sept. 20 at the Troy-based St. Joseph Catholic Church.

MCC Bylaws (under Purpose, Section III.1.c.) emphasize that MCC strategies shall include outreach to "underserved and high- risk populations, and shall be designed to close the gap between minority and majority populations." Also, the MCC's Guiding Principle 5 states that the MCC should support "efforts to increase awareness and share strategies to reduce the burden of cancer disparities faced by ethnically diverse and underserved populations."

The event marks the third time ACC has joined the Beaumont Cancer Institute in providing educational tools to minorities.

Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano visits the Youth Center

bpThe Arab American and Chaldean Council (ACC) and Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano teamed up to provide school bags and supplies to 150 kids ages four to seven on Sept. 12.

Coinciding with the start of the 2007-08 school year, the county executive and ACC's President and CEO Dr. Haifa Fakhouri and Chairman Abe Munfakh handed the supplies to the Metro Detroit area's underprivileged children as part of the Wayne County Back-to-School Program. World Vision is an international children's charity that has donated book bags countywide.

"Not only does this program provide essential tools for education, but it helps elevate self-esteem for those children in need," Ficano said.
