Community Outreach Programs

ACC sponsors Community Career Fairs in cooperation with the U.S. Army Great Lakes Recruitment Division and the Army National Guard to assist in identifying interpreters and linguists. According to the Great Lakes Recruitment program director the division doubled the number of qualified participants eligible for the program through the assistance of ACC. 

In support for refugee acculturation outreach services ACC's Community and Family Strengthening and Integration Project targets the Metro Detroit Arab and Chaldean population. The project consists of 6 components: Target refugee community involvement and development, Bilingual orientation workshop series, Building the home-school partnership, Prevention, education, and health awareness activities, English as a Second Language (ESL) and Vocational ESL classes and Employability training.   The purpose of the Community and Family Strengthening and Integration Project is to help new refugees learn the necessary skills for assimilation into society, ESL, employment and training, education, and citizenship. Funded by the Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan  

Reflected in the various activities offered to students, government agencies, and the community at large, the Cultural Tapestry Program is a creative program that promotes cultural appreciation and tolerance of the Arab and Chaldean culture. This cultural program is a key component in ACC’s mission to create a bridge of understanding for a safe, healthy, and peaceful community.  ACC takes a leadership role in responding to current events that impact our communities through its comprehensive cultural diversity and sensitivity training. Programs are tailored to meet the particular needs of the targeted audience. They range from small group in-depth lectures for professional educators and law enforcement agencies, to broadly informative cultural programs for school and community groups.  

ACC’s United Way Program Family and Individual Stress Management Program provides community outreach through Special Assistance Services which provide life’s basic necessities including household items, clothing and emergency food to those in need. Donations are primarily distributed to low-income children, elderly, and refugee families. The program has made a difference to 2,000 clients by providing to meet the basic needs of individuals and families.    Funded by United Way for Southeastern Michigan  

Newly arrived immigrants and refugees benefit from ACC’s Immigration Services. Accredited by the Board of Immigration Appeals, ACC’s immigration specialists help in the preparation of documents for the Office of Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for applications for citizenship, asylum, non-immigrant visas and family unification petitions. Clients are also represented before the USCIS and Immigration Court.  Funded by United Way for Southeastern Michigan  

Maal Jalia Ethnic Radio Program is a 15-year-old live radio talk show program that hosts community leaders to discuss current and important issues and topics concerning the Arab American and Chaldean community. Lively discussions and debates between guests and listeners on issues affecting the community makes the radio program an effective part of ACC’s programs and services.  ACC understands that education is a fundamental part of a youth’s social and personal development. Hosting ACC’s Sixth Annual Golf Outing & Scholarship Awards Dinner provided 10 high school graduates scholarships. The students had to provide exceptional academic achievement skills and demonstrate leadership abilities through volunteerism and community service.

The Scholarship Awards Program is available once a year to graduating high school seniors.  Education is a fundamental part of a youth’s social and personal development. ACC’s Scholarship Award Program financially assists graduating high school students as they pursue their education. Scholarships are based on academic excellence and financial need. Applicants must be a high school senior, who has been accepted to college, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and has demonstrated extracurricular/ volunteer activities. Proceeds from ACC's Annual Golf Outing provide funding for ACC's Scholarship Program.

2010 ACC Scholarship Application

ACC collaborates with the Michigan Secretary of State in order to offer orientation, registration, driving permits and Arabic tests to applicants over the age of 18. Written tests are held once a month at ACC.  The purpose of this program is to assists individuals with language barriers in obtaining their drivers license.  

In partnership with Focus:HOPE, ACC Senior Citizen Services are offered to Oakland and Macomb county residents through community outreach efforts to distribute food to needy senior citizens. The services are available at ACC’s office located at the Troy-based St. George Orthodox Church.

 

ACC’s VIN Etching Program is an auto theft prevention process which provides free vehicle identification number (VIN) etching. VIN etching is a light but visible stencil of your VIN number on each piece of glass in your car - windshield, windows and sun roof. It is a quick process and may qualify you for a discount on the comprehensive coverage provided by your auto insurance policy. Funded by the Auto Theft Prevention Authority
