On Saturday, September 29th, the Arab American and Chaldean Council (ACC) hosted its 33rd Annual Civic and Humanitarian Awards Gala: Celebrating Michigan. Every year, the ACC honors extraordinary individuals who are visionaries in their respective areas of work. This year, the ACC honored those who are improving and investing in Michigan's rising future.
Speaking at last year's Arab American and Chaldean Council's (ACC) Annual Golf Outing and Scholarship Awards Dinner, ACC President and CEO Dr. Haifa Fakhouri promised to increase the amount of scholarship recipients this year. She kept her word. On June 16th at Shenandoah Country Club in West Bloomfield, eighteen scholarships were awarded to high school seniors attending college this fall, as opposed to the 10 distributed last year. The diverse group of awardees expressed gratitude to the ACC. Some say the experience has inspired them to someday award a scholarship to a deserving student. “I like to tell them I greatly appreciate this honor, and it's truly something like none other. By helping me they're also helping the whole community. Because I'm also going to support the community. I plan on giving back to the community in several ways. And hopefully one of them will be to provide a scholarship of my own,” recipient Ahmad El-Moussa said.
ACC hosted the 2010 Gubernatorial Candidates Mayor Virg Bernero and Governor Rick Snyder at its 31st Annual Civic and Humanitarian Awards Gala on Saturday, October 16th, 6:00p.m. at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center.
The 2010 honorees included: Dr. Patricia Maryland, President & CEO, St John Health System, Ms. Nancy Schlichting, President & CEO, Henry Ford Health System, Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel, Mr. Azzam Elder, Deputy County Executive, Wayne County, MI, Mr. Wally Jadan, President, MEA TV & Radio, and Mr. Louie Boji, Founder, The Boji Group. General Motors Foundation President, Ms. Vivian Pickard, will emcee the evening's program.
ACC's 8th Annual Golf Outing & Scholarship Awards Dinner, benefiting the ACC Scholarship Awards Program was held on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at West Bloomfield's Shenandoah Country Club, located at 5600 Walnut Lake Road.
ACC hopes to ensure the academic success of deserving students. Scholarships help attract and retain intelligent and capable, but financially disadvantaged students.
In collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security-Office of Citizenship and Immigration ACC hosted an official U.S. Citizenship Swearing-In Ceremony on Friday, December 18th, 10:00 a.m. at St. George's Cultural Center in Troy. Nearly 300 individuals took an oath that officially made them citizens of the United States of America.
ACC-Behavioral Division was proud to host a Unification Celebration at 2:00pm on Friday, January 29th at its Youth Recreation & Leadership Center, located at 62 W. Seven Mile Road in Detroit. The celebration was in honor of a long awaited reunion between a father and his two young daughters. Thanks to the efforts of ACC and its dedicated staff this family was reunited after almost 7 years.
Developed to meet the needs of refugee youth and their families, ACC's Youth Stay-In-School Program focuses on under privileged youth ages 8-18 with limited English skills. This after school and summer program works to increase academic achievement and improve literacy rates among refugee students so they may excel and succeed.
Having good health is important for all members of the family. ACC's Angels Night Family Fun Fair, hosted by ACC and the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion on October 30th at ACC's Youth Recreation and Leadership Center in Detroit, provided a safe family environment for fun activities and free health services for those in need.
In recognition of their lifetime of dedication, service and commitment ACC’s Board of Directors dedicated its Detroit Headquarters, Youth Recreation and Leadership Center, and Artisana Adult Learning Center in honor of founding members Salman Sesi, Esq., Dr. Haifa Fakhouri, and Father John Badeen on Friday, December 17 at its Youth Center, located at 62 W. Seven Mile Road in Detroit.
On March 9th ACC’s JET (Jobs, Education and Training) Program partnered with the Detroit Public Library (main branch) to kick off its much-needed math and literacy tutorial project. This cutting-edge collaboration is aimed to improve basic literacy and math skills for welfare recipients who have scored low on mandatory TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) testing. Statistically, welfare recipients with low education skills stay on welfare the longest while those with stronger education skills quickly become more self-sufficient.
ACC hosted a City of Detroit Town Hall Meeting with Mayor Dave Bing on Thursday, March 18 at 5:30 p.m. Mayor Bing, key staff, and community leaders discussed the impact and importance of the 2010 Census and their plans for economic development in the City of Detroit. The meeting was held in the gym at ACC's Youth Recreation and Leadership Center.
ACC’s Jobs Education and Training (JET) Program, in partnership with Southeast Michigan Community Alliance (SEMCA) and Michigan Works, hosted its 2nd Annual Back to Work Job Fair on Wednesday, May 26th from 10:00am to 1:00pm at ACC's Hamtramck office, located at 9019 Jos Campau, 48212. ACC's employment programs strive to build bridges between businesses and the workforce. With last year's event receiving such an overwhelming response, ACC expanded its Job Fair to include more employers.
The Public Health Division, in partnership with Connecting the Dots of Michigan, hosted a FREE “Back to School” Health Fair on Friday, August 27, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Bridge Academy in Hamtramck. The purpose of this event was to provide free health services to the uninsured and underinsured.
ACC’s SEMCA Substance Abuse Prevention Program, in partnership with Global Education Excellence (GEE) and Students Against Alcohol Drugs And Violence (SAADV), hosted a Hamtramck Community Town Hall Meeting on underage drinking on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at Bridge Academy in Hamtramck. This event was part of a national effort to increase understanding and awareness of underage drinking and its consequences, and to encourage individuals, families, and communities to address the problem.
ACC, its Board of Directors, and Advisory Board hosted guest speaker Daniel Loepp, President and CEO for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, on Monday, March 8, 2010 at its Youth Center in Detroit. Mr. Loepp's presentation highlighted the Blues mission and commitment to providing quality health care.
On Thursday, August 19th, ACC and Fifth Third Bank hosted its first eBus Small Business Expo at ACC's Youth Center in Detroit. “The purpose of the Expo is to not only educate businesses on various financial resources that are available to them, but to also have open dialogue relative to their issues and concerns that will be addressed by a panel of financial experts,” said Loretta Humphrey-Cruz, Fifth Third Bank Community Development Marketing Specialist.
In partnership with Cooley Law School, ACC's Detroit Behavioral Health Program teamed up with the Youth Program to identify a special family for an “Adopt a Family for Christmas” program. The family made a humble list of items for Christmas; however, thanks to Professor Mary D'Isa and her law students' generosity the family was overwhelmed with the Christmas Spirit.
