Staff Informs the Community on Cancer Issues
The
Arab American and Chaldean Council’s Public Health Department
in partnership with William Beaumont Hospital presented a Cancer
Education, Prevention and Early Detection Seminar. The seminar
drew community members and medical health professionals, together
to discuss and make improvements in cancer related issues. This
event was the first of its series presented by ACC and William
Beaumont Hopsital in joint efforts to educate and work towards
the decrease of cancer incidences among the Middle Eastern community
in Southeast Michigan.
Approximately 350 particpiants
had the opportunity o visit vendors and speak with the health
representatives. The evenings emcee William Salaita, ACC Director
and "Maa Aljailia Arabic Radio Talk Show Host. Opening remarks
were presented by Frank A Vincini, M.D., Chief of Oncology at
Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, and Dr. Haifa Fakhouri, ACC President/CEO.
Presenters included Beaumont resident
staff members, Samer Ballouz, MD, Ammar Sukari, MD, and Muhyi
Al Sarraf, MD. Dr. Sarraf began the presentation on the most common
cancers found in people from the Middle Eastern culture, Dr. Ballouz
spoke on the importance of early detection and treatment of cancer,
and Dr. Sukari and Dr, Jane Archer presented on cancer prevention
and information on the benefits of clinical trials.
Presentations were delivered in
Arabic with English subtitles on an over-head screen. The seminar
concluded with a question and answer session and dinner.
